چکیده

It is well known that households in developing countries often experience weather-related and other shocks that drastically affect incomes. A large and growing literature explores the ef®cacy of ex ante and ex post responses to these events. One strand examines how households respond to these shocks. Three studies that exemplify work in this area are Udry (1990) on credit as insurance, Fafchamps, Udry and Czukas (1998) on the role of livestock as a means of smoothing consumption, and Kochnar (1999) who examines the role of labour market activity as an ex post response to income shocks. A second strand looks at the effectiveness of these strategies in reducing ̄uctuations in consumption. The principal result that emerges, as summarized in Morduch (1995, 1999) and Townsend (1995), is that some, but not all households can smooth consumption. In particular, households facing liquidity constraints have limited smoothing ability. For these households, therefore, income ̄uctuations will generate a welfare loss. This paper contributes to this literature, but differs from the studies listed OXFORD BULLETIN OF ECONOMICS AND STATISTICS, 63, 4 (2001) 0305-9049

Study of Germination and Seedling Growth Parameters of Three Clover Species (Trifolium spp.) under Drought and Salinity Stresses

DOR: 98.1000/2383-1251.1398.6.145.11.1.1575.1610 Extended Abstract Introduction: Agriculture has been influenced by different abiotic stresses such as temperature, drought and salinity, which reduces roughly half of the yield of crops. In many forage plants, germination and early seedling growth are the most sensitive stages of their growth in the face of environmental stresses. Current r...

Effect of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) on the Seed Germination, Seedling Growth and Photosynthetic Pigments of Astragalus caragana under Drought Stress

Drought stress is one of the most important factors limiting plant growth all around the world. Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) can significantly reduce drought stress effects on plants growth. This study was aimed to investigate the influence of PGPR (inoculation by Azospirillum lipoferum, Azotobacter chroococcum, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus cereus) on seed germination, se...

اثر پیش‌تیمارهای مختلف بر صفات جوانه‌زنی و رشد بذرهای برنج (Oryza sativa) در مقایسه با نانوذرات نقره در طی تنش خشکی

The present study sought to compare the effect of seed priming by hydropriming, ascorbate and calcium chloride (CaCl2) versus different concentrations of silver nanoparticles on two Iranian rice cultivars (Hashemi and Shiroodi) under drought stress. The experimental design, which was factorial, was completely randomized. The first factor was control (without priming), hydro-priming, 20 mg.L-1 c...

Effects of seaweed extract and nano-zinc oxide on seed germination characteristics and growth of tomato seedling under drought stress conditions

In order to study the effect of seaweed extract and nano-ZnO on germination characteristics of tomato seed, a factorial experiment was conducted based on a randomized complete block design. Preliminary germination and seedling growth tests were performed to determine the best concentration of seaweed extract and nano-ZnO. Experimental treatments included three levels of drought stress (0, 2- an...

Effect of Drought Stress and its Interaction with Salicylic Acid on Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) Germination and Early Seedling Growth

Environmental stress, particularly drought stress can play an important role in reducing plant growth especially during the germination stage in arid and semi-arid regions in Iran. For cultivation of medicinal plants in arid and semi-arid areas, the assessment of their tolerance is very important. In this research, in order to evaluate the effects of salicylic acid pretreatment on enhancement o...

Patterns of mitochondrial gene expression in rapeseed leaves (Brassica napus L.) at early growth stage in response to drought stress

Drought stress adversely affects a plant’s growth and productivity. Wide ranges of molecular disorders could be caused by the production of reactive oxygen radicals. Plant cells have developed potential systems to prevent such damage by scavenging and reducing the reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, both the genotypes of oilseed rape-tolerant and sensitive to drought-were exposed to p...
